Prathat Nadoon - Maha Sarakam

Prathat Nadoon
Situated 470 kilometers from Bangkok, Maha Sarakham is a small province in the North East part of Thailand. Being the educational hub of the region, this place is also known as "Taksila of Isan". Maha Sarakham is famous for its historical sites。

Maha Srakam is one of the most important sites of ancient property in the Thai Kingdom, apart from several ancient Khmer style chedi, there have been numerous discoveries of ancient amulets and antiques.

It was at Nadoon, a district of the province, that some of the most beautiful amulets were unearthed in an ancient kru, such as the 1,000 year old pims from a cell named “Kru Pra Boromthat Nadoon”.

It was recorded that more than 40 different Pims were discovered including Pim Lila, Pim, Pim Prok Koo, Pim Prok Koo Tuddiaw, Pim Pratanporn, Pim Patiharn, Pim Si lium, Pim Vow Chula, Pim Si Mum Merng, Pim Sam Liuam, Pim Mokala, Pim Salibutr, etc. The Buddha amulets from Maha Sarakham's Nadoon Stupa were excavated in 1979 and are believed to have been made by royal craftsmen 1,000 to 1,300 years ago.

The land on which the ancient Kru was found is owned by Mr. Tongdi Pavaputa, a local of Nadoon District, who said that his family had lived there for generations.

He revealed that the Kru lay undisturrbed for more than a thousand years , no one noticing it until the day that he had by chance dug into the ground at the base of a low rise hill. He located the chedi which was later named Phrathat Nadoon.”.

Pra Boromthat Nadoon, or Prathat Nadoon, is situated on a base approximately 1 metre higher than the surrounding ground.

It is located near Merng Boran, an ancient town of the province where other ancient Khmer-style buildings such as Ku Santarat, Sala Nangkhao and Ku Noi can be found.

Note: Ku and Kru are not the same, Ku referes to an ancient Khmer-style chedi or castle but Kru means cell or cells where sacred amulets were retained.
It is assumed that Prathat Nadoon is part of the old town as it is located about 500 metres away from Ku Santarat, where several other sacred artifacts were previously discovered.

It is also recorded that on June 8th, B.E.2522, sacred relics of Lord Buddha were discovered in this area.

The relics, similar in appearance to broken white rice, were kept in a stupa, which also filled inside with a kind of Thai fragrant oil called Nam Man Jun. When the stupa was first opened, there was a fragrant aroma that filled the air even after 1,000 years.

The majority of the 40 recorded pims were designed in classical Davaravadi art, often featuring Lord Buddha sitting under Bhoti tree.

Most of Davaravadi-period artisans usually designed Buddhist Images which told the history of Lord Buddha and many of their designs have become prototypes of later day amulets.

It is believed that at least some of amulets found at Kru Pra Boromtart Nadoon were created by Indians, not Thais, who provbably entered the northeastern part of Thai Kingdom through the Chee and Moon rivers during period B.E.1200-B.E.1500.

This pim is known as Pim Pang Prathanporn , and is one of the most characteristic and impressive amulets you are ever likely to see anywhere, measurung some 17 x 8.0 cm. Not only that it is very rare.

This pim is known as Pim Nak Prok Song Na, due to the fact that it is twin sided. Also referred to as Pim Niyom. Considered to be the most beautiful and consequently the most desirable and precious of all the pims.

Ms Somsuda Ratanin of Otago University of New Zealand analysed these amulets and found that they are predominately made of sand, rice, stones and sticky rice, and other unidentified components.

After 1,300 years the majority of these amulets are almost stone like in appearance. However the Nak Prok amulet possesses the appearance of molten glass, exhibiting a rainbow of colours.

Prakring Klongtakian amulets of Wat Pradoosongdharma, Ayudhaya Province

Wat Pradoo Songdharma, Ayudhaya Province, was constructed about 380 years ago during Ayudhaya Kingdom.
After an invasion by Burmese soldiers the temple was wrecked and remained deserted until the the period of the Rhatanakosin Dynasty, when a sacred monk named Luang Por Rodsur had traveled to the area and found the temple in ruins and without attention of amy monks. As a result he made the decision to renovate the temple himself, and today remains prosperous.

It was said that the monk had the power to control fierce animals such as the tiger through his sacred sciences. He is also known to have created many sacred amulets.

Phra Kring Klongtakian amulets are without doubt the most famous and have been noted to protect worshippers from danger and weapons.
Phra Kring Klongtakian amulets were made of clay mixed with ashes of Bai Larn (leafs of ancient Dharma Books). The revserse etched with a sacred yant.

NEWLY DISCOVERED PHRA NANGPHYA AMULETS

On March 29th, B.E.2553, a secret cell (Kru) was discovered at Wat Bortongkum, Hua Ror Sub-district, Merng District, Pitsanuloke Province.

Many sacred objects and amulets were discovered but in particular Pra Nangphaya amulets, the most famous amulet of the province. These newly discovered pims exhibit all the characteristics of the original Phra Nangphya amulets found at Wat Nangphaya in the same province.

Phra Atikarn Tawi Atagaro, the temple’s abbot, said that the temple was built during the Ayudhaya Kingdom but had been deserted for several hundred years when in B.E.2543 it was renovated and officially declared a legal temple..

Prior to the renovation it was reported that thieves had on may occasions stolen precious artefacts including gold, Buddha Images and ancient pots. Fortunately they had not discovered the location of the secret Kru.
The abbot said that the Kru was more than two metres below ground and located beneath the temples Viharn.,

Mr.Yongyos Mek-arun, Vice Governor of Pitsanuloke Province, had suggested the abbot not make known his discovery in fear that the temple would be subject to further robbery.

He also suggested that the temple should set up an information centre to educate the public about the find and that some of the amulets should be released for sale to support both charitable work and further repairs.

It was also reported that Mr Surin Thitipunya, President of Pitsanuloke Province’s Local Administration had visited the temple to inspect the amulets, and purchased a number for himself.

There has been a massive demand for these pims, with many experts and dealers descending on the temple to purchase these valuable pims. A good example was Mrs Tasani Tongparn, a resident of Chonburi Province, who once hearing the news immediately rushed to purchase a number of pims totaling 30,000 baht.

She said that apart from buying the amulets she also supported the temple’s renovation projects.
Today you would be lucky to obtain one of these pims as Mr. Naris Piyapruk, Vice Governor of Pitsanuloke Province requested that the Abbot remove all the ancient jars and pots containing the amulets and donate them to the public at large via the the Historical Centre of Juntra Palace, Pitsanuloke Province.

We are lucky to have obtained a few of these pims, which of course are many hundreds of years old having been created during the Ayudhya period.

The Nanphya amulet is accepted as one of the ‘Grand Five’ set (Bejapakee) The original Nangphya amulets originate from Wat Nangphya, situated next to Wat Ratchaburana, Phitsanulok.
Wat Ratchburana was built by King Maha Thammaracha of Sri Ayudhya during his rule of the province, while Wat Nangphaya was built by his wife Wisut Kasattri around BE 2095-2100.

Both temples were originally on the same piece of land, but a later road separated them. The Chedi was destroyed and cleaned, and these triangular shaped Buddha images were discovered in BE 2442-2444. These amulets were made from earth, mixed with flower petals along with gravel and sand.

The amulets were classified into 6 different pims. It is believed that these amulets are good for Charm, protection and wealth.

This Nanphya amulet discovered at Wat Wat Bortongkum is easily as good as the original pims but very much less expensive. A real treasure and a great way to start making up a genuine Benjapakee collection.

This is probably your one and only chance to own one of these amulets.
